Type Locality and Naming
Pearl River Mouth Basin (offshore). The named section is located in No.1 of Guangdong Xinjiang basin; the reference section is located in HZ13-1-1 in Huizhou section. Named in 1981 by Zhong Shuixian and others.
Lithology and Thickness
The Formation can be divided into three sections: Lower section is gray-white fine conglomerate, conglomerate sandstone with thin layers of gray silty mudstone, containing thin layers of lignite, asphaltene shale, and charcoal chips; Middle section is gray silty mudstone, clayey siltstone and medium-grained sandstone interbedded; Upper section is dominated by gray-white sandy conglomerate, intercalated with gray silty mudstone and lime sandstone. The lithology becomes finer from west to east. The thickness gradually increases from west to east, from north to south, 180m in the west, 520m in the east, and 808m in the south.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
It is in disconformity contact with the underlying Mid-Miocene Hanjiang Fm.
Upper contact
It is in disconformity contact with the overlying Pliocene Wanshan Fm.
Regional extent
It is widely distributed in the Zhujiangzui Basin.

Fossils
This Formation contains foraminifera, calcareous ultrafine and spore-pollen fossils. Among them, the foraminifera planktonic is in the N16-N17 zone. The main representative elements are Globorotalia acostaensis, Globigerina nepenthes, Globoquadrina dehiscens, Sphaeroidinellopsis kochi, etc., as well as benthic species; Calcareous nannofossils are in the NN11-NN10 zone, and its characteristic elements include Discoaster quinqueramus, D. berggrenii, Amaurolithus amplificus, Braarudosphaera bigelowi, etc.; the spores and pollen are the combination of Graminidites-Chenopodipollis.
